About kıraathane

kiraathane The literal meaning of the word kıraathane is “a place of reading”. It was the name given to old Ottoman cafés across Anatolia, the Balkans and the Near East, where locals would gather to socialise, read and discuss whilst drinking a glass of tea or a cup of coffee, and perhaps smoking nargile. These cafés would typically provide their customers with newspapers, magazines and all the latest publications of the time. Hence it’s not so difficult to understand why all the new and interesting ideas of the period in that region would spring out of these places…

I wish I had my own kıraathane so I wouldn’t have to tell you all these on a computer screen. But as we are both aware, you and I, the times have changed and the infinite nature of human imagination now needs to be tucked inside the borders of this evil evil thing called technology. And that’s exactly the reason why I decided to be a lame romantic and call my personal blog kıraathane.

I know the site gets confusing when my posts are not written in a single language. But certainly it’s globalisation to blame if I have to pursue two different lives in two different languages, not myself!

One of my long term goals is to shut down all my online accounts the day I open my own real kıraathane. And maybe then, dear reader, all these words will be said to you in person instead of being put in digital characters.

Till then, take care!

    • Lilia mou,

Thanks for your lovely words and nice to hear from you too. Looks like we both belong in Mahallas, by the way! I’ll start writing there as soon as I get my head together. :)
